Petrel

Low Tide ~ Lyman Morse Boat Builders

Low tide at a saltwater inlet in Thomaston, Maine. Streaming clouds hint at the storm that is due to arrive later in the day.

Lyman Morse Boat Builders

By the water's edge at Lyman Morse Boat Builders...we have arrived for the Christening of the Petrel.

Petrel Christening 14

Her graceful lines are indescribably beautiful and no detail has been overlooked. It has taken my husband's cousin 38 years to plan, design, and build her. She is one man's dream. Her name is Petrel. This is how WIKIPEDIA describes this unusual seabird.

The word "petrel" comes from the Latin name for the Christian Saint Peter, and refers to the habits of certain species to hover just above the ocean waves, with their feet barely touching the water, thus giving an appearance of walking on water, as St. Peter is said to have done.

Her Christening was on dry land due to the approaching storm, but someday the Petrel will sail in Maine waters and beyond. She would withstand the incoming weather, but we might not!

  1. Hello Carol:
What a beautiful and superbly crafted boat - the realisation of a dream and one in which most certainly your entire family shares. A close friend of ours spent his working life designing yachts for Camper Nicholson here in Britain.

    1. Hello Jane and Lance ~ I know Peter's cousin would be gratified to read your comment. It's an art isn't it...and we wish him many years of happiness sailing her.

  2. I was surprised to find when I turned to this post that you'd had others recently - your updates had not been showing up on my blogroll for some reason. Anyway, even if you were there the whole time, I want to say welcome back.

The boat is lovely but the first photograph of the storm warning is superb. Good photo of you, by the way. As friendly-looking as I might have imagined.

  3. The clouds are just beautiful.
When we used to travel to the east coast... Maine, Cape Hatteras, the Carolinas... is was the coldness of the water off the coast of Maine I remember most. Brrr!
    Have a great week.

  5. ps It's getting harder and harder more me to prove I am not a robot. I always breathe a sigh of relief when the letters/numbers I type in match the request for non-robotic genius!

    1. home before dark ~ I think Peter's cousin will tweak the Petrel for another 38 years, but this time sailing her too!

I agree, those squiggly numbers and letters are stressful. I need a robot to plug them in for me!
