Goat's beard, which looks like a long stemmed dandelion, is one of my favorites. I especially love them when they grow by the sea and I love the way the setting sun makes the petals glow. The blossoms seem to float, weightless on a summer's breeze. Then, just when the flowers go to seed, Maine gardens burst into flame with day lilies everywhere. They are a sign of summer's mid point...welcome and beloved, but they arrive with a pang.

Day lilies cascade down the bank to the bay on our own bit of shore. Every year the wind and tide shift them a little, but they tenaciously cling to the steep clay and ledge with almost impossible growing conditions.

The whole summer lies ahead with the promise of sunny days and warm weather. The evenings are scented with wood smoke from a cheerfully glowing fireplace...warmth to ward off the chill in the cottage. The calendar fills with arrivals and departures, but more on that later!

For me the passage of time is marked by the waves of color in the garden.

Peter carefully mows around brave tiny bluets that are sprinkled across the cottage lawn in May. The bluets are quickly followed by violets, lily of the valley and ajuga. The small flowers seem to hug the newly warmed earth.

Crabapple, lilacs and lupine quickly follow as May melts into June.

I always think of JCB and her gentleman when I see crabapple blossoms...and a very romantic proposal amidst fluttering pink petals.

Soon the cottage is filled with the scent of lilacs.

Peppery lupine perfumes the air on Blue Hill Mountain in June.

And finally peonies burst into bloom, my favorite...the last of them faded a week ago.

We are also changing with the garden colors. A September move is in the works...still in Maine, but closer to the cottage. Initial chaos, followed by a little simplicity! I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer!

Summer seems to have come and gone after two days of sweltering heat in the 90s. Cold damp rain has settled in for the week. Meager cottage heat keeps the chill somewhat manageable...if you are not a dachshund!

Maine's traditional seaside towns have changed with rising prices for waterfront properties. Stonington, on Deer Isle, is one of the few towns left where one can see the fishing industry and old way of life. I have photographed Stonington many times; I chose monochrome for this visit to enhance the feeling of old Maine.

I like to take a different lens whenever I walk around our small town. I never know what I will see and I often find I have limitations with the one I've chosen...and that's half the fun and a learning experience too. On this particular day I had a wide angle when my zoom would have been more helpful.

It was a glorious warm day with daffodils appearing and the bright splash of forsythia everywhere. I noticed two skateboarders down at the town dock. They were very good and I seriously wished I'd left the wide angle at home. They didn't mind if I took pictures, in fact, they seemed to take riskier gravity defying jumps. I thought of all the kids with skateboards and how very few of them have views like the two boys I met down at the dock.

I would have moved in closer for the above shots if not for the puppy. It was a Heinz 57 variety, huge at eight weeks old. I think there is even some boxer in its lineage. One of the boys had brought it home the day before and it crept into my lap for a cuddle while they practiced.

A recent trip to Washington was timed perfectly with the cherry blossoms. We've made frequent trips to D.C., but we have not witnessed the blossoms' magical transformation of the Tidal Basin for nearly forty years. There is always speculation on when the trees will flower and peak. Many a visitor's hopes are dashed by the unpredictable blossoms and uncooperative weather.

The day was unseasonably hot...so tempting to spend several hours in the cool galleries of our favorite museums. We decided to brave the crowds and the heat because the odds of seeing the cherry blossoms at their peak again are probably fairly slim.

We were startled by the look of the scaffolding in preparation to repair earthquake damage making a slow ascent on the Washington Monument on the photo above.

A strong thunderstorm rumbled through the Washington area early the next morning. A few days later, our departing plane circled around the Capital giving us another glimpse of the Tidal Basin. The flowers were gone. Below, some captures of those sweet fragile blossoms here for such a short time.

Our dearest Eric left us in April, beloved husband to Mary, beloved friend of ours. He left this world with his children's arms around him, wrapped in love in the peace of the early morning hours. It was the kind of passing all should celebrate and welcome with gratitude. Yet, I will miss Eric with all my heart and I will, for the rest of my life, yearn for one more afternoon in his company, one more smile and the laughter that filled thirty years of Mere Point summers.

Eric was a handsome man, courtly, a New Englander to his core and deeply spiritual. He was a 'giver' who gave to his country, family, friends, neighbors and colleagues, always helping and mentoring others all his life. He made everyone in his orbit feel special, valued, prettier, smarter and capable of great acts and ideas.

Eric spoiled a long line of German Shorthair Pointers...one in particular and it seems like yesterday when we heard him call,

Zeus come!

Zeus never would, finally turning up, in his own 'Zeus time'. Every other dog, ours included, simply wanted to be near him.

Eric was a beautiful sailor and a tolerant and gracious captain which was a novelty in my experience! Over the years he taught Peter the tides, the channels, ledges and winds of the bay we call home. He was a sailor who read the sky and water, grateful for the sun on his face and a good tack. That was Eric. He was grateful for all life's blessings and he knew the value of each and every one. Whenever I saw him, he always said,

every day is a gift.

He left us in early spring as the earth was warming and new life was just beginning to stir. I offer the following gifts in his memory.

Peter hikes up Blue Hill Mountain with new green grass at his feet, trailing dogs...he will miss Eric in ways I can not fathom.

The yellow house is a well known landmark in Blue Hill, Maine. The home, which is now a museum, belonged to the town's first Congregational minister and was, in fact, built by Parson Jonathan Fisher with the help of his neighbors. The frame went up in a day in 1812 and the house was completed in 1814.

The parson was a stern shepherd who preached a rigid code of behavior and unquestioning devotion to God to his flock, but he demanded far more of himself than he did of his parishioners. Jonathan Fisher was a builder, architect, draftsman, artist, inventor, writer, scholar and more. One can still see the imprint of his personality in his home today.

I have wanted to photograph the interior of the Parson Fisher House on a winter's day for a long time. The project I envisioned was a study of the natural light, to capture the essence of the rooms as they were long ago. I imagined the parson and his wife, Dolly, looking through the same windows feeling just as anxious for spring as I am now. New president, Amey Dodge, kindly gave up a morning to let me in with my camera.

The house will not open until mid July so many artifacts are still packed away for safekeeping. Pink insulation board covers the fireplaces and green rug pads are scattered across the floors. I touched nothing and simply set up my camera, shutter release cable and tripod. The conditions were challenging and, by mid morning, the sun was already higher than I would have liked. To complicate things further, fast moving clouds obscured sunlight and I had to rapidly change settings throughout the shoot.

The following photos are from my project. Clicking on the photos will take you to Flickr, once there, please click on the photo again to see in Lightbox and once more on Fullscreen to experience a March morning at the Jonathan Fisher House.

Maple Sugaring Sunday, held on March 24th this year, brought out large crowds of Mainers touring the sugarhouses and sampling the best maple syrup in the country. While other parts of the world are enjoying crocuses and daffodils, we are definitely into sap! The above photo shows the sap line at Ducktrap Valley Maple Farm in Belmont, Maine.

The owner of Ducktrap Valley told us how he had spent all winter building his sugarhouse in anticipation of tapping 75 trees which he hopes to increase to 175 someday. I hope he realizes his dream...it takes 50 gallons of sap to produce a gallon of maple syrup. Liquid gold!

Our next stop was Bradstreet Maple Farm, a much larger operation, in Searsmont, Maine. It was a long squishy walk through slippery mud past pretty farmhouses to the sugarhouse.

At last we reached the sugarhouse! Inside the sap was boiling and young folks were serving waffles with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup to all the visitors.

The air was thick with steamy fragrance.

We are told the sap inexplicably stopped running for about 10 days and started to flow again just in time for Maple Sugaring Sunday. Perhaps it was due to the twelve inches of snow and unseasonable weather we experienced the week before.

This batch of sap is almost ready as it is brought to a final boil.

...and at last!

...and my favorite way to enjoy this delectable treat? I will wait until July when I can sprinkle fresh wild Maine blueberries on vanilla ice cream with Maine maple syrup!

Just for fun, an old shot from the archives, taken 27 April, 2011 watching landings and departures in San Francisco. I've zoomed my old Canon Powershot to the limit and the photo is straight out of the camera...no Photoshop, or April fooling! Watching those planes reminded me of the movie Pushing Tin. Here's the trailer!

It was a day to lull the unwary into thinking spring was here when the temperature inched a little higher and the sun warmed the mud flats at low tide. Ice was disappearing in the bay and the seagulls were hungry. One by one, the gulls flew back to the rocky shore with mussels.

This gull gets a prize for originality by carrying a mussel in its claws!

The gulls flew in wide circles across the bay and over the far shore...

...looking for the right rock, an isolated rock to drop the mussel.

Then, soaring upward, the gull drops the mussel to crack it open on the rocks below. The next time you walk along a rocky shore and see broken shells, think of the hungry gulls!

If you click on the above photo and run your cursor over the image, you can see the gull and the falling mussel.

A 24 second exposure, taken using a tripod and shutter release cable. The streak of red is from the lights of a passing snow plow.

The only available light in this shot was from the windows across the street and a lamp post further down the road. You can't see it, but the snow was coming down quite hard. A 20 second exposure...I cut it a little shorter to emphasize the utter quiet and peace of that beautiful snowy night.

We woke up to a foot of snow the next morning! These photos are much better if you click through to Flickr and click again on the image to view in light box!

When I took this a few days ago one could almost believe spring might actually arrive. The wind was biting, but the sun was warm. The tide was very low in our shallow bay and for many people, that is when water views are less attractive...even smelly from decaying plant and animal life. It's actually a time when the shore is alive with wildlife. As a fellow Mainer and Flickr friend wrote, Heh, that was essentially my playground as a kid. Any wonder I became a biologist?

The view looking toward our small village and the firepond that is fed from the millstream seen a previous post.

It is a haven for birds and already the ducks are pairing off, the drakes loudly advertising their charms!

Despite the 8 to 10 inches of snow we may get tomorrow, our world is waking up. Next...the gulls!

This is the time of year we see patches of old snow by the roads and in the shady recesses of our yards. Plumes of sand and salt, left by the plows, billow in the air and our eyes are red and watery. In another month trucks with huge brushes will come by to clean up. Signs of spring!

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R Donaldson is a fantasy series I read too many years ago to count. Covenant discovers an alternate universe called The Land, a place that is alive and beautiful, but the land is threatened by Lord Foul who wants to destroy it. Much has already been laid waste and the seasons are out of kilter. It is a scenario that sounds all too familiar today. What remains with me now are Donaldson's descriptions of the land and its sheer loveliness. I always think of The Thomas Covenant Chronicles at this time of the year when there is a stirring of rebirth.

It begins with the sound of melting ice, the slow plop of water drops, rushing water in a stream, cheery birdsong and that magical night when we hear tree frogs at last. We happily greet the first dandelion...only to do battle with them later in the summer. But I'm racing ahead of myself, this is only the beginning...

The mist lifts for a moment and clouds part to reveal shimmer on the water in Fort William, Scotland.

A friend posted photos on Instagram this morning of Edinburgh. A light blanket of snow covered the city in scenes that looked cold and wintry. A year ago bright daffodils dotted grass that was the color of emeralds and a pale haze of pink softened the trees. On 11 March, we left spring in Edinburgh to drive through the highlands and on to skye. Below are more photos from that starkly beautiful journey.

The neon red roof of the Seafood Restaurant was a welcoming beacon as we pulled into Fort William. It was warm and cozy inside and the food was delicious and fresh.

We drove on to Eilean Donan after lunch. I can't think of a more atmospheric or romantic place, no wonder it is the most photographed castle in Scotland. We didn't linger because we were anxious to get to Skye before dark, but we did have a chance to spend more time there on our return trip.

And off for a day of exploring, a little whiskey tasting and lots of photography. Along the way we passed this pretty farm near Carbost.

The selection has improved over time. Perhaps it is the result of a blossoming, and very welcome, new foodie culture that celebrates our delicious home grown produce. Creative chefs are also adding ethnic twists to old favorites and Mainers with adventurous tastes are responding enthusiastically, trying out new restaurants and searching for new herbs and spices not seen in our stores in earlier times. Even so, Peter and I are hopeless rice snobs and we could not find our Bombay Original brand of Basmati rice anywhere. Our dilemma required a trip to the bounteous Co-op in Belfast.

I love Belfast and have written about and photographed this seaside town before. I decided to bring just a small 50 mm prime lens which easily fits in my handbag. I love this lens for its portability, clarity and the way it makes me think about my shots. The following photos show some of the exceptional details in Belfast's lovely brick work.

Peering into the windows of the Lost Kitchen which unfortunately won't be open until dinner. You can read more about this remarkable bright spot in Maine's culinary offerings here.

...and finally, not so lingering views of the waterfront on that cold raw day, wind whipping up surf and freezing my fingers!

It has been snowing all day, tiny flakes drifting down but not sticking. The days are noticeably longer, the sun higher in the sky and winter's tight brittle grip is loosening. Our signs of spring can be seen in dancing sparkly bokeh and the audible tick tick of melting ice.

So much has happened since that lovely family time together and I still have not finished editing and posting all my photos. I did manage one blog post last April titled The Bride with Pearls and a Fuchsia Bouquet. Just married at City Chambers in Edinburgh, the couple allowed me to photograph their exuberance and happiness. I've always hoped the pictures would find a way to them through the internet...March 9th will be their first wedding anniversary.

Our plan was to drive through the highlands and on to the Isle of Skye after our stay in Edinburgh. Early spring flowers and a soft green haze were in evidence in spite of the chill. Our first stop was a charming Inn called Monachyle Mhor in Valquhidder Glen.

A perfectly timed evening ramble with a setting sun casting a golden glow across the glen took our breath away. The wind was fierce and we welcomed the crackling fire at the inn...not to mention sampling some unique single malt whiskeys!

We left Monachyle Mhor the next morning with real regret.

No paintings, books or photos prepared us for the sheer scale and stark beauty of the highlands. We all tried to capture the atmosphere...here are some of mine...

My daughter quipped this solitary little house must be the most photographed home in the highlands!

...and on to Fort William for a cozy lunch and picturesque Eilean Donan, but I will save that for another day.

I try to remember many things while composing a shot, light, angle, composition and camera settings and many shots wind up in my computer trash bin. I practice almost daily, I want the steps to seem as natural as brush strokes.

Random Memory #30 ~ Hong Kong

I am sitting at a table in Mr. Lao's class with my felt cloth and a section of rice paper unfurled before me. I have been grinding ink and making horizontal and vertical lines on my rice paper over and over and over. I have been doing this for weeks.

A fellow student arrives with a small package which she proudly unwraps to show Mr. Lao. It is an exquisitely carved antique ink stone, the surface smooth as silk. It is a wonderful find she purchased in one of the many fine shops in Central...it could have been a museum piece. Mr. Lao's face is a blank mask, he says, "Put it away. It belongs to a Master."

It will be months before I am allowed to paint a cherry blossom.
