Views from the Winter Kitchen

IMG_8316

In spite of our best intentions, we tend to retreat to the kitchen in winter; to the warmth of the large granite fireplace, flickering reflections on copper pans, the worn oak table and a little wine in the Twomey Vineyard glasses we purchased last spring in California. The palette is simple, wood and a white crockery collection Peter calls "stainware."

Late at night, a soft snowfall is illuminated by the kitchen door light.

The silhouette of an antique twine holder, a gift from JCB and surprisingly useful!

After a series of gray days, I suddenly notice reflected blue in one of the three kitchen windows, it's as if a film is playing out on an old fashioned projector.

...and the view when I turn around and see...

golden light across the snow covered ground. Simple winter joy.

  2. Beautiful sun rays coming through the snowed tree.

Is it still 'too cold' if one is to sunbath at this time?

    1. de engineur ~ Thank you! The sun appeared after quite a few very overcast days. The temperature is very cold, well below 0C most days, but you can still get a sunburn, especially on a sunny day with reflected light from the snow!

What magical views from your winter kitchen, all to be enjoyed in the warmth of an open fire whilst wrapped around a glass of wine. Does it get better.....no, not as far as we can see!!

  7. Our kitchen is still in the basement. It feels like we are the human version of the Secrets of NIMH! Strangely comforting! However, I am looking forward to the finished world upstairs and being able to see the light change through the day and evening. We take our wine upstairs and light candles and talk to the shadows of the kitchen/library to come. Love the image seen through the wine glass. It reminds me of paintings of lace, being able to see and see through.

I'm sure Cooper was in his apron just out of sight of the camera fixing a nice hot toddy or just snarfing Scotch and its box!

    1. home before dark ~ You are having an extensive renovation! We've never had the energy to redo anything after the upheaval of so many moves...we patch and live with a lot of quirks! It will be bliss when you come up from the basement for the last time...makes me think of Garrison Keillor's "Larry!"

Cooper runs the risk of being stepped on in the kitchen...the little begger!
