Fast Forward Spring
Spring is elusive in Maine. Some people say we have two seasons...winter and 4th of July. Sometimes that seems true! This year, spring has been like sliding doors beginning with the softening colors of Scotland, a burst of colorful blossoms on last week's trip to Connecticut and finally, our homecoming in Maine yesterday. How strange it is to watch unfurled leaves slowly close into tight buds with every mile on the long drive home.
The following photos are from Connecticut which is a month ahead of us. The most wonderful thing is knowing we can enjoy it all again!
More of Connecticut's glorious spring display soon!

Hello Carol:
ReplyDeleteThis really is, as your glorious images show, the most wonderful time of year. But how strange that Maine should be quite so far behind.
Hello Jane and Lance, thank you! We are approximately 400 miles north...and snow in May is not unheard of. It is indescribably beautiful when summer finally does arrive!
DeleteBrilliant, if I may say so. The idea of watching leaves furling back into buds - a wonderful image of retreat if ever I read one.
ReplyDeleteDear Blue, thank you. The blossoms' retreat into buds is so dramatic. We've experienced it many times and it still gives me a pang on the trip home. Our spring arrives all at once (if late!) with an explosion of color...almost impossible to describe.
DeleteThinking of you, Carol, after learning about the fire at the end of Mere Pt. I am sure you have learned about it by now. Hope your haven is safe and sound. What an amazing thing--surrounded by water but unable to access it when needed--did you hear they had to go all the way to the boat launch to get water after exhausting the potential of a (probably low) fire pond nearby?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your concern, Mike. The fire was tragic, a devastating loss for our neighbors and the little community has been shaken up badly. We all know the risks of living where we do, but you never think it will touch you, or your friends so personally. I heard there were 80 firemen from 9 towns fighting the blaze. A heroic effort that saved the other homes. I can't emphasize enough how grateful I am for what those men did. I knew about the little pond, but not about the water from the boat launch.
DeleteI hope we can finally get together this summer. We should be opening around mid-May.
Sounds like spring and great news are busting out in Maine! Hearty congrats on both counts!
ReplyDeleteToday we might reach the 90s. UGGGGGHHHHHHH! No spring really just plantus eruptus in March. Roses and peonies in April and I'm really not ready for another summer of no rain. Can you tell this earliness has made me cranky?
home before dark, Thank you!!! We are euphoric about JCB's and her gentleman's news up here in chilly Maine! To tell you the truth, I've forgotten what 90 feels like up here where spring arrives with the enthusiasm of a condemned man to the scaffold. I'm still wearing fleece and that makes ME cranky :D
